📘 General SERU Assessment FAQs

The Taxi SERU (Safety, Equality and Regulatory Understanding) assessment tests your knowledge of TfL Taxi regulations and English language skills. It’s computer-based and based on the Taxi Driver Handbook.

If:

  • You’re applying for a new taxi driver licence on or after 1 October 2025
  • You’re renewing a taxi driver licence that expires on or after 1 October 2025
    You must pass the Taxi SERU assessment to be licensed or re-licensed as a London taxi driver.

There are 36 questions:

  • 24 Multiple Choice
  • 12 Fill in the Blank
  • 2 Reading & Understanding

The assessment lasts 60 minutes.

You need at least 60% to pass. Most students get two attempts.

At TfL’s driver assessment centre:

Yes. You must complete the online safeguarding awareness training before sitting the Taxi SERU assessment. It’s self-paced and not supervised.

No. The TfL Taxi SERU is different from the PHV Driver SERU assessment. Each has its own handbook and rules.
